Why an Office file breaks, and how it is rebuilt
A DOCX, XLSX or PPTX is not one file but a compressed package of parts: text, formatting, images, formulas and an index tying them together. When a save is interrupted or a network drops, the index is damaged or a part is truncated, and the application refuses the whole package even though most of the content survived.
We work at the level of those parts: extract the ones that are intact, rebuild the index, and reassemble a package that Office will open. With workbooks we make a point of preserving formulas, sheet names and formatting rather than values alone - a spreadsheet without its formulas is not a recovery.
Where the file is deleted rather than damaged, the work moves to the medium: we take a full image of the disk and extract the files from it, and never write to the original.

Mistakes that lose the file for good
- Formatting or reinstalling the system on the disk holding the files
- Saving new files or installing software on the same disk
- Saving the recovered copy back over the original location
- Running arbitrary repair tools straight at the damaged file
- Re-saving over a damaged file after trying to open it
- Shutting down the server or deleting the shared folder before inspection
Never work on the original file. Take a copy first, and if you cannot, do not touch it.

Frequently asked questions
My Excel file opens empty or says it is corrupt. Can it be saved?
In most cases yes. That message usually means the package index is damaged rather than the data, so we extract the sheets and formulas and rebuild the file. The condition is that nothing has been saved over it since.
Do you keep the formulas, or only the values?
We preserve formulas, sheet names and formatting, because a spreadsheet without its formulas is not a recovery. Where part of that cannot be saved, the report says so before you pay.
Can you recover a file that was never saved?
Sometimes. Office keeps temporary recovery copies in known locations, and they can survive on disk after the application closes. The inspection establishes whether they exist in your case.
The files are on a company server or a shared folder. Do you handle that?
Yes, including servers, NAS units and RAID arrays. What matters is that the server is not shut down and the folder is not deleted before inspection, and that we are consulted before anything is done to it.
The files are password protected. Will you open them?
We recover the file as it is, protection included. We only remove protection for the owner, on proof of ownership, and within what the law allows.
Will you sign a confidentiality undertaking?
Yes, and before we take the medium in if you prefer. Access is limited to the assigned engineer, and our copy is wiped once you confirm receipt.
How long does it take?
One to two working days for the inspection. Repairing a single damaged file is usually faster than recovering a whole folder from a failing disk, and the report gives you an exact timeline before we start.
